Skills Necessary for Celebrity Bus Drivers
Many people don’t realize that when celebrities such as movie stars, rock and roll bands, and talk show hosts are on the road or at work, they’re usually living in a bus. Though the term “trailer” is often used on film sets, the truth is that many celebrities call a luxury bus home for the duration of a job, be it a film shoot, a music tour, a book tour, or otherwise. Although on a film shoot the buses are often stationary during the day, there are many instances in which these wheels are put into motion. What are the skills necessary for celebrity bus drivers?
As many of us know, in life, there are cab drivers, and there are limo drivers. So, too, are there bus drivers and celebrity bus drivers. “Driving celebrities and other creative times is a world unto itself,” one insider says. “It’s not like driving around a bunch of businessmen. This job can be tough, unpredictable, and ultimately really fun.”
Across the greater United States, luxury bus company owners agree: only the elite have what it takes to be a celebrity bus driver. So, what are the skills necessary for celebrity bus drivers?
- Technical know-how. As with a driver of any large vehicle, a luxury bus driver must know how the vehicle works and how to troubleshoot should anything go awry. Production companies working for celebrities typically hire Luxury buses to travel to tightly scheduled events. If Bon Jovi gets to a concert two hours late because of something a driver could have easily fixed himself, it’s not just Bon Jovi who’s going to be mad; it’s thousands of fans.
- Specific technical know-how. The knowledge that a luxury bus driver needs goes well beyond the vehicle itself. Most luxury busses contain systems you might expect to find in a house — air conditioning, showers, even stoves and refrigerators. On the road, the driver is the go-to contact about everything having to do with the bus. The driver must be knowledgeable in all areas.
- The ability to handle a wide range of personalities. Though it’s impossible to sum up succinctly, creative people, artists, and performs are different than the rest of us. They work extremely long and intense schedules. They have hours of heightened energy output and are away from home for extended periods. Adding to that, their creative (and sometimes eccentric) nature makes them demanding clients, even unintentionally. Celebrity bus drivers have to be accommodating, and they have to have a head on their shoulders. Listening to a client’s needs and making sure those needs are met has never been as important is it is for the celebrity bus driver.
