Shooting On Location in NYC

Are you shooting on location in NYC? What even is a parking permit? The untold myth of permitted parking in new York city, we all know the no parking zones will always and forever remain a no parking zones, but when you are shooting, what does that mean for your team, for your client, what steps will you have to take? – we can make this brief since we’ve talked about permitting in a previous blog,
· Now you have the parking permit, what will your team need to do? Once you have your permit, the city request you give them a street, not a specific address, because NYC parking is never really guaranteed. Like those early morning risers, a parking spot goes hand in hand with the saying “first come, first serve.”
·

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION: shooting on location is a suburb or on a beach or near a field is always wayyyy easier.

Parking is abundant or it comes with the location you’ve chosen for your project, but it does not have what New York City offers… The unique thing about New York City shoots is that whether it’s a commercial campaign video or standard editorial shoot – the city is a part of the story our clients wish to tell. The hustle and bustle of the city, the unique atmosphere, and the views the city offers are hard to replicate elsewhere.

Many of our clients hire parking PA’s to arrive upwards to 2 hours earlier and hold the ideal space for them.
So when we were shooting in the Flatiron district, a PA arrived on location to secure the “presidential” Motorhome location.
Once inside that NYC authorized permit zone, you attach the city of New York authorization stamp to the door, and the police stay away and let you work without a hitch.
·

What about when you move locations in NYC?
You must plan ahead if you intend to move to different locations throughout the shooting day.
Most moves happen in the latter part of the day, and the city will not hold your spot. Parking is scarce in NYC and having a parking PA holding your site in the new location is advisable. A bit of luck and proper planning will get you through a complicated NYC shooting schedule.

If it’s this much trouble, why even rent a motorhome?

The amenities a motorhome provides during shoots are crucial. They provide:

  • A restroom for a 12/14 hr day
  • A kitchen/dining room for your team
  • Space for the glam team to get the model or talent ready
  • A safe haven from the weather

A moho is a studio on wheels that is worth a bit of paperwork and proper timing.
