Production Tips: Producing a Fashion Show

Producing a fashion show is a great way for a designer to get the word out about his or her newest line of designs. They can also be excellent ways for local store owners to get a taste of what designs are available for purchase in the area. For this reason, local fashion shows are a popular event to throw. However, the show producers are usually professionals with a vested interest in the fashion show — either a retailer or a designer. Therefore, those putting on the show are not necessarily always professional producers.

If you’re new to producing fashion shows and want to try, consider these key points as you plan your first show.

Build Your Show
Who will your fashion show be showcasing? Get the word out to local designers and get a feel for who might want to be part of your fashion show. Appeal to designers who you know have offerings that are specific to the show you’re throwing. A niche market is better. You want to build a common interest between attendees and designers. For example, don’t invite a bathing suit designer to display at a show attended by only coat buyers.

Don’t be wary of this part of the process. Many designers will want to be a part of your show — doing so will be a huge benefit to their business!

Find Models
If you aren’t located in an area that has a lot of professional models, don’t fret. Local men and women who are willing to strut their stuff will do a great job.

Location Is Important
Location is always important while producing a fashion show. Where will the show be held? Centrally located fashion shows will naturally draw more traffic. Try to find a location that is nearest to somewhere relevant to the biggest population of attendees you’re hoping for. To attract downtown boutique owners, choose a location within the district where most shops are located. Making it easy for attendees to get there is a big plus for a fashion show.

Beyond the geography of your space, you will also want to consider the layout of the location you choose. Make sure that you’re going to have enough space for a runway and for attendees to either sit or stand to observe. Additionally, make sure there’s an area for the models to get dressed and ready that is offstage.

Licenses and Permits
Did you know that some locations require a special license if you’re going to be playing music? Before you sign any contracts with a location, make sure that you are aware of any permits you’ll be required to obtain, and make sure that you still have enough time to get them.

Price, Advertise, and Sell Tickets
Is your show benefitting a charity, or are you only charging enough to cover costs of the show itself? Know what your end goal is, and price accordingly.
